I wasn’t supposed to make it. Raised by a single mother on food stamps, I didn’t grow up with opportunities handed to me.     I enjoyed the blend of different concepts the author used to create the “balance sheet of life” idea. The book gives a basic, easy-to-follow framework for shaping your Ultimate Self based on a no-frills snapshot of where you are today. The biggest takeaway for me was being cognizant of how I spend my social, emotional (and mental), and financial capital by identifying traditionally difficult to measure aspects of life as assets or liabilities. After doing the worksheets I ended up with many more liabilities than assets but those results mostly reflected my own, sometimes subliminal, perceptions. However, I don’t plan on throwing my dog out the window just because he’s a liability; he brings me joy. Instead, recognize that every profitable balance sheet still has liabilities. You just have to have good reasons for why they are there and make sure you have enough assets and resources to offset them so that you can keep growing in the right direction.
